What Is a Shamrock Shake?

It’s that time again! Time for the shamrock shakes, corned beef, and all things green to make an appearance this month. Are you on board?

If you’ve never had a Shamrock Shake before, it’s essentially a rich and creamy mint milkshake that’s a brightly colored shamrock green.

Truth be told, I’m not Irish, but I do love going out for a green beer on St. Patrick’s Day and making corned beef in my slow cooker. And, of course, I always need to snag one (or three) shamrock shakes when they make an appearance at McDonald’s.

But, as we all know, those shamrock shakes are loaded with iffy ingredients, and probably a few things that we don’t even want to know that’s in there. After all, that’s what fast food life is like, right? (Don’t worry, I’m not judging you for indulging in that. I do, too!)

But, ever since I completed a round of the Whole30 diet back in February, I’ve really been paying attention to what foods I buy and consume. Of course, I still like the less healthy things, like chocolate and chips, but I’m trying to buy more wholesome ingredients, and less processed foods.

Which brings me to today’s latest and greatest creation: a Copycat Shamrock Shake!

I know there are hundreds of shamrock shake recipes floating around in Pinterest world. But, since I like sharing classic, easy-to-make recipes, I thought this one deserved a spot in my little corner of the internet.

Yes, it’s sugary and sweet, but undoubtedly better than the McDonald’s version!

Ingredients for a Homemade Shamrock Shake

Just a few ingredients are all it takes to whip up this easy Shamrock Shake. My secret weapon in this Shamrock Shake recipe is Vital Proteins® Collagen Beauty Greens.

Much like their Collagen Peptides and Collagen Creamers, this is a blend of Non-GMO Marine Collagen Peptides combined with healthy organic greens, and provides Vitamin A, hyaluronic acid, and probiotics. It helps with healthy skin, hair and nails.

So even though we’ll be sipping on these Copycat Shamrock Shakes, we can get a boost of healthy collagens in here, too. Sounds pretty good, right?

Here’s what else you’ll need to make this DIY Shamrock Shake:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Milk
  • Green food coloring
  • Mint extract
  • Whipped cream, maraschino cherry, and sprinkles (for garnish, optional)

How to Make a Shamrock Shake at Home

Skip the drive-thru and make your own Copycat Shamrock Shake. Sweet vanilla ice cream and a touch of mint are blended together until smooth and creamy. Topped with whipped cream and a cherry, you’ll be making this minty shake all year long!

And like most of my recipes, this mint shake is a breeze to whip up. In fact, it’s so easy (and delicious) that your blender might just be getting a workout every day of the week. Ssshhh…I won’t tell. I mean, who can resist that minty, creamy, decadent taste?

  1. In the canister of a blender, combine the ice cream, milk, Vital Proteins® Collagen Beauty Greens (if using), food coloring, and mint extract.
  2. Blend until reaches desired consistency.
  3. Pour into a tall glass and top with whipped cream, sprinkles, and a cherry, if desired. Serve immediately.

Instead of going out for that shamrock shake, grab those ingredients and whip up your own at home. I guarantee you’ll fall in love with this smooth and minty shake!

Do I Have to Use Collagen Powder?

Nope, it’s an optional ingredient that doesn’t affect the flavor or texture of this Shamrock Shake.

Can the Food Coloring Be Omitted?

Yes, but the shake won’t be Shamrock green if you omit the food coloring. However, I understand if you prefer leaving food coloring out of your shake!

Tips for the Best DIY Shamrock Shake

  • Be sure to use mint extract, not peppermint extract. While you could use peppermint, it gives the shake a candy cane flavor instead.
  • To give the shake that pretty green color, use green food coloring. I used about 9 drops of green gel food coloring. If using the liquid kind, you might need to adjust the amount of drops.
  • Don’t forget the sprinkles! If you want to be extra festive, add a touch of green sprinkles to the whipped cream.
