There are so many mac and cheese recipes out there… but when you’re hungry right now, standing over a stove is not the vibe.
This microwaveable mac and cheese is what I make when I want something warm, creamy, and ridiculously easy…no boiling water, no draining, and barely any cleanup. I first shared this on Instagram and it went viral…it’s almost at two million views viral, so you know it’s gotta be good!
I’ve also tested this recipe over 10 times, so I can guarantee the noodles will cook and the pasta will be creamy.
It’s perfect for quick lunches, after-school snacks, or those late-night cravings when you want comfort food fast.
And the best part? You only need a handful of ingredients and about 5 minutes to make it happen.
And just an FYI, this isn’t just another shortcut recipe…it actually solves real-life problems.
The pasta cooks right in the microwave, so there’s no need to babysit a pot or wait forever for water to boil. It’s completely single-serve, which means no leftovers and no waste.
And unlike boxed versions, you can control the ingredients, making it extra creamy, flavorful, and customizable to whatever you’re craving.
If you love mac and cheese like I do, you need to try this creamy mac and cheese (one of my most POPULAR recipes), baked queso mac and cheese, and meatball mac. You can serve these as a hearty side dish or quick main dish!

Ingredient Notes:
- Pasta: Elbow macaroni or another smaller shape because it will cook more evenly in the microwave.
- Water: Used to cook the pasta directly in the mug or bowl.
- Salt: Enhances the flavor.
- Shredded cheddar cheese: Sharp cheddar gives the best flavor. For the creamiest results, shred your own.
- Milk: Makes the sauce creamy and smooth…whole or 2% works best.
- Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, etc.

How to Make Mac and Cheese Microwave:
This recipe is a breeze to whip up! Be sure to check out the recipe card towards the bottom of the page for a full list of ingredients and directions.
- Add noodles, water, and salt to a large microwave-safe mug or bowl (make sure it’s big enough to prevent overflow).
- Microwave for 2 minutes, then stir.
- Continue microwaving in 2-minute intervals, stirring each time, until pasta is tender and most of the water is absorbed (about 5-6 minutes total).

- Stir in shredded cheese, milk, and seasonings.
- Microwave for another 30–60 seconds to melt the cheese, if needed, and then stir until creamy and smooth. Let sit for 1 minute to thicken.
Common Mistakes (And How to Fix Them):
- Pasta is still hard: add 1–2 tablespoons of water and microwave another minute.
- Mac and cheese is dry: stir in a splash of milk before serving.
- Cheese is clumpy instead of creamy: add cheese after cooking the pasta and stir well while hot. Shredding a block of cheese (instead of using the bagged kind) will melt and taste better.
- It overflowed in the microwave: use a larger bowl and don’t skip stirring between intervals.
5 Ways to Upgrade Your Macaroni and Cheese in a Microwave:
If you want to take this to the next level, try one of these easy variations:
- Buffalo Chicken: Stir in shredded chicken and buffalo sauce
- Garlic Parmesan: Add garlic powder and extra parmesan
- Pizza Mac: Mix in pepperoni and a spoonful of marinara
- Spinach & Feta: Stir in fresh spinach and crumbled feta
- BBQ Chicken: Add chicken and a drizzle of BBQ sauce

Homemade vs. Boxed Mac and Cheese:
| Option | Time | Taste | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microwave homemade | 5 minutes | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Easy |
| Boxed mac & cheese | 10+ minutes | ⭐⭐⭐ | Medium |
Tips and Tricks:
- Choose a large microwave-safe bowl or mug and place it in a larger bowl so that when the water boil over, it will catch the water (and not create a mess).
- Microwave in short intervals and stir each time to ensure even cooking and avoid sticking.
- Use freshly shredded cheese for the smoothest, creamiest texture (pre-shredded can be a little grainy).
- If the pasta looks dry, add a splash of milk before serving to loosen the sauce.Let the mac and cheese sit for 1 minute after cooking to allow the sauce to thicken.
Can I make this without milk?
I haven’t tried it without milk, but you could add a splash of water or some butter for richness.

Can I make this gluten-free?
Absolutely! Just use your favorite gluten-free pasta.
If you’ve ever needed a quick comfort meal that actually tastes amazing, this microwave macaroni and cheese is it. It’s fast, simple, and endlessly customizable…basically the kind of recipe you’ll find yourself making on repeat.

Microwave Mac and Cheese
Ingredients
- ½ cup dry pasta, such as elbow noodles
- ½ cup water
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (you can use more or less cheese depending on your tastes)
- 1 tablespoon milk, any kind (I used 2%)
- Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, etc, for seasoning, if desired
Equipment
Method
- In a 16-ounce (or larger) microwaveable mug or bowl, add the pasta, water, salt, and stir to combine. Note: The water will boil up and most likely over, so it is important to use a large mug or bowl. I like to place the mug in a larger bowl so that it will catch the water when it boils over. Just let it continue to overflow in the microwave, as it will cook the noodles, but be sure that not all the water evaporates before the noodles are cooked.
- Microwave for 2 minutes, then remove and stir. Place back into the microwave and heat for another 2 minutes, then remove and stir. If the noodles aren’t softened to al dente, continue to microwave in 2 minute intervals, or until noodles are softened and cooked through. You may need to add more water if it is absorbed before the noodles are softened. Note: Microwave times/watts vary, so yours may take longer to cook. As long as the noodles are covered with enough water and it continues to boil, it absolutely WILL cook the noodles. My noodles were cooked in 5 minutes, 30 seconds, but all microwaves are different.
- Once the noodles are ready, stir in the shredded cheese, milk, and seasonings (if using). If needed, microwave for another 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the cheese is melted. Enjoy immediately.
