Healthy Apple Pie Smoothie

Now that fall is almost here, apples (and pumpkins) have become the star of the show.

Whether you go apple-picking in the fall or just pick from the endless combinations at the grocery store or farmer’s market, it’s definitely apple season. If you’re looking for more apple pie inspired treats, you’ll love these apple pie scones, apple pie puppy chow, and apple pie overnight oats.

Back to this apple pie smoothie recipe. It’s loaded with healthy ingredients, like apples (of course), Greek yogurt for protein, and milk. It’s naturally sweetened with honey or maple syrup and gets that pie-like flavor from cozy spices.

The health benefits are plentiful and the taste is a delicious way to enjoy a slice of apple pie…in drinkable form.

Not only does this healthy smoothie capture cozy fall flavors, but it’s a great option to add to your breakfast or snack rotation. It takes just minutes to make and you probably have all of the ingredients in your kitchen.

The results? A creamy smoothie, loaded with flavors of apple pie, minus the vanilla ice cream. If you’re feeling a little extra, add a dollop of whipped cream and a cinnamon stick for garnish. It’s so good that I guarantee you’ll be making this year-round.

Ingredients in Apple Pie Smoothie:

  • Two fresh apples
  • Milk of choice
  • Greek yogurt
  • Honey OR pure maple syrup
  • Spices: apple pie spice OR ground cinnamon; nutmeg
  • Vanilla

How to Make Easy Apple Pie Smoothie:

  1. Add all ingredients to the canister of a blender.
  2. Blend until it reaches your desired consistency and add more milk to thin out the smoothie, if needed. Taste and add more honey/maple syrup to sweeten, if desired.
  3. Serve immediately.

What Kind of Apples Should You Use?

Any kind of apple can be used for this smoothie. I prefer a sweeter kind, such as honey crisp or gala, but if you have a less sweet or tart apple, such as granny smith, you can add more honey or maple syrup to sweeten.

What Kind of Milk Should You Use?

Any kind of milk works in this recipe! I used oat milk, but almond milk, soy milk, or cow’s milk would work just as well.

What Type of Yogurt to Use:

I used vanilla Greek yogurt in this recipe, but plain Greek yogurt also works for that added boost of protein and a creamy texture. Regular or plain yogurt will also work, but it may not be as creamy or have as much protein as Greek yogurt.

Sweetener:

If using vanilla Greek yogurt, you may find that you don’t need any sweetener at all.  But, to sweeten this naturally, honey or pure maple syrup (not the kind loaded with sugar) is a healthier option.

Do You Need to Peel the Apples?

No! Core and roughly chop the apples so it’s easier to blend, but no peeling is necessary. Once blended, you won’t be able to taste or feel the texture of the peels. Plus, it adds pretty red flecks to the apple smoothie!

How to Make a Thick Smoothie:

  • Add a lot of ice: I filled the blender about half full with ice cubes to give it an ultra-creamy texture.
  • If you have the time, freeze the apple chunks: this will help give it that creamy texture.

Storage Instructions:

I wouldn’t recommend storing leftovers, as the smoothie will melt in the refrigerator.

However, you could freeze the smoothie for about a month: pour the smoothie into an ice cube tray and then freeze. When ready to serve, add to a blender and mix until it reaches your desired consistency (you may have to add more liquid to thin it out).

Add-ins:

While this delicious smoothie is perfect as is, if you’re looking to add an extra ingredient or two, here are my suggestions:

  • Chia seeds
  • Frozen banana (for extra creaminess)
  • Peanut butter (or another nut butter)
  • Vanilla protein powder

Healthy Apple Pie Smoothie

Yield: 2
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
This Healthy Apple Pie Smoothie is made with simple ingredients and captures the flavor of the classic pie. Filled with healthier ingredients, this fall smoothie is perfect for apple season!

Ingredients

  • 2 apples, cored and roughly chopped, (see notes below)
  • 1 cup milk, (any kind)
  • ½ cup plain OR vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey or pure maple syrup, to sweeten, (if desired)
  • 2 teaspoons apple pie spice OR ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste, (or vanilla extract)
  • Ice cubes, to thicken, (if desired)

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to the canister of a blender.
  • Blend until it reaches your desired consistency and add more milk to thin out the smoothie, if needed. Taste and add more honey/maple syrup to sweeten, if desired.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

  • No need to peel the apples! The chopped apple chunks will blend smoothly and there will be no gritty texture.
  • Any kind of apple can be used for this smoothie. I prefer a sweeter kind, such as honey crisp, but if you have more tart/less sweet apples, you can add more honey/maple syrup  to sweeten.
  • I find that apple pie spice gives this smoothie a better apple pie flavor than ground cinnamon, though both are just as delicious. If you are out of apple pie spice, you can make your own with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cardamom.
