It’s officially pumpkin season and I’m so excited, friends!

With a website name of Pumpkin ‘N Spice, you better believe that I love pumpkin everything. From pumpkin brownies to eggless pumpkin pie, and pumpkin pie pudding, there’s no shortage of these recipes come fall.

And since muffins are one of my favorite goodies to make, it only seemed natural that I added these easy pumpkin chocolate chunk muffins to the list.

The base of the recipe is adapted from my pumpkin blueberry muffins (and pumpkin banana and pumpkin apple) and let me tell you, this version is so darn delicious.

These pumpkin chocolate chunk muffins have all the flavor of classic pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, but using chocolate chunks creates bigger pockets of melted chocolate and a bakery-style look, thanks to a few easy tips. And to be sure this turns out with just the right amount of sweetness, and melty chocolate chunks, I tested this recipe three different times!

Ingredient Notes:

  • All-purpose flour: Provides the structure for soft, tender muffins. Be sure to measure using the spoon-and-level method to avoid dry muffins.
  • Granulated sugar + light brown sugar: Using both sugars creates the perfect balance of sweetness. Brown sugar also adds moisture and adds a subtle caramel flavor that pairs beautifully with pumpkin.
  • Baking powder + baking soda: Working together, these leavening agents help create tall, fluffy muffins with bakery-style domes.
  • Pumpkin pie spice: Gives these muffins that classic warm fall flavor without needing several individual spices.
  • Ground cinnamon: Adds an extra boost of cozy spice and enhances the pumpkin flavor.
  • Eggs: Help bind the batter while adding richness and structure.
  • Vanilla: Rounds out the flavors and makes the chocolate taste even richer.
  • Pure pumpkin puree: Be sure to use 100% pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugar and spices.
  • Melted coconut oil or vegetable oil: Oil keeps these muffins incredibly moist for several days.
  • Chocolate chunks: The star ingredient! Chocolate chunks melt into larger pockets of chocolate than regular chocolate chips, giving these muffins a richer chocolate flavor.

Why Chocolate Chunks Make These Muffins Better:

While chocolate chips work just fine, chocolate chunks take these pumpkin muffins to another level.

Chocolate chunks:

  • Melt into gooey pools of chocolate
  • Create a bakery-style look
  • Deliver bigger bites of chocolate
  • Make every muffin look more homemade

Chocolate chips:

  • Hold their shape while baking
  • Distribute more evenly
  • Create smaller chocolate bites

If you only have chocolate chips, they’ll still taste delicious, but chopped chocolate or chocolate chunks create the richest texture and prettiest finished muffins.

The Secret to Bakery-Style Muffin Tops:

Want those tall, impressive muffin tops you see at bakeries? Here’s what makes the difference:

  • Start baking at a high temperature: Beginning at 425°F creates a quick burst of steam that helps the muffins rise rapidly.
  • Lower the temperature after 5 minutes: This allows the centers to finish baking without overbrowning the tops.
  • Don’t overmix the batter: Stir just until no dry streaks remain. Overmixing creates dense muffins.
  • Measure flour correctly: Too much flour is one of the biggest causes of dry, heavy muffins.
  • Top with extra chocolate chunks: Besides looking beautiful, they create irresistible melty chocolate on top.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Use room temperature eggs for smoother mixing.
  • Don’t substitute pumpkin pie filling for pumpkin puree.
  • Save a handful of chocolate chunks to press onto the tops before baking.
  • Let the muffins cool for at least 10 minutes before eating so the crumb can finish setting.

Variations:

  • Add nuts: Stir in chopped pecans or walnuts for extra crunch.
  • Use dark chocolate: Dark chocolate chunks create a richer flavor that pairs wonderfully with pumpkin.
  • Make mini muffins: Bake mini muffins for about 10–12 minutes.
  • Add a crunchy topping: Sprinkle coarse sanding sugar on top before baking for a bakery-style finish.
  • Mix in white chocolate: Swap half of the chocolate chunks for white chocolate chunks.

Storage and Freezing:

Store muffins in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Refrigerator:

  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Pro tip: warm for 10–15 seconds in the microwave before serving.

Freezer:

  • Freeze cooled muffins individually in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container for up to 3 months. For best results, thaw overnight in the refrigerator or microwave for about 20–30 seconds until warm.

Common Pumpkin Muffin Mistakes to Avoid:

Here’s how to prevent the most common problems.

  • Dense muffins: Usually caused by overmixing or adding too much flour.
  • Dry muffins: Overbaking is the most common culprit. Remove them from the oven as soon as a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
  • Flat muffin tops: Starting the bake at a high temperature helps create those tall bakery-style domes.

Serving Suggestions:

These pumpkin chocolate chip muffins are delicious on their own, but they’re even better served with:

  • Hot coffee (my favorite combo!)
  • Pumpkin spice latte
  • Chai tea
  • Salted butter
  • Cinnamon honey butter or maple butter (I love buying a jar or two from a pumpkin patch come fall)
  • Vanilla Greek yogurt and fresh fruit
